Metro Dumaguete Water continues Watershed Management Initiatives
Jul 1, 2021

DUMAGUETE CITY – Metro Pacific Dumaguete Water Services Inc. or Metro Dumaguete Water (MDW), a joint venture between Metro Pacific Water (MPW) and Dumaguete City Water District (DCWD), has added more than 5,000 trees in Dumaguete’s watershed in Barangay Lunga, in the Municipality of Valencia.

The trees were planted within the span of five months after MDW started operations last February 1, 2021. MDW has continued the legacy initiated by the DCWD in 2012 by adopting the 380-hectare watershed to ensure water sustainability for its consumers. Around 60,000 forest and fruit trees have since been planted in the last nine years.

As partners with DCWD in ensuring the sustainability of water supply, MDW established a team focused on reforesting and propagating and monitoring the growth of the trees at the Lunga Watershed.

MDW celebrated this year’s World Water Day Celebration with DCWD in Lunga, Valencia last March. The two entities were joined by the Local Government of Valencia, Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, Rotary Club, and Negros Highway Patrol Group. During the Kapihan sa PIA (Philippine Information Agency) forum last March, MDW COO David Berba shared their pledge to plant 7,000 trees within the year.

“It is important that while we exert efforts in improving our services, we do not forget to protect our sources. Our watershed is crucial to sustain our current water supply. We are committed to implementing more sustainable programs with our partners as part of our commitments for the next 25 years,” said Berba.

Berba also assured environmentalists in that forum that MDW is looking into the possibility of sourcing surface water in the future as this is known to be the most sustainable option.

MDW, further commits to strengthen partnerships with the LGU and the community through its health and safety and environmental CSR programs.

Apart from its watershed initiatives, MDW recently turned over handwashing facilities for vaccination posts to Dumaguete City as part of their Hugas Luwas Dumaguete Program. Photo Caption: MDW Team during the World Water Day Tree Planting at Lunga Watershed.
